Very Peri! A color that symbolizes technology and innovation, as well as creative possibilities for the future
After two years of facing up against the consequences of a pandemic and navigating constant innovations to keep people safe, it's fair to say there are mixed feelings of uncertainty and optimism.
The Pantone Color Institute has responded to those feelings with its Color of the Year, for the first time creating a new color; one that captures the "transformative times" we're living through, evoking developments emerging in the virtual and digital spheres. The name: PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri.
Examining the power of creativity, it's the first time in twenty-two years of Pantone's Color of the Year that a new color has been created to commemorate challenges and celebrate hopes of what 2022 will bring.
For the new color, the institute has mixed bluish tones, to evoke feelings of confidence and calm, with red hues that are evocative of energy and stimulation. The result is a tone that seeks to communicate ideas of innovation and our relationship with digital reality, the world between screens, and the advent of a world where the virtual intertwines with the physical.
In the words of Pantone, the color is "a dynamic periwinkle blue hue with a vivifying violet red undertone blends the faithfulness and constancy of blue with the energy and excitement of red."
Creating a new color to mark the new year is symbolic of a world that has had to learn to reinvent itself, imagine new realities, and innovate in every way in a bid to build new foundations—both on the physical plane and in the digital.
According to the agency, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri illustrates: "the fusion of modern life and how color trends in the digital world are being manifested in the physical world and vice versa."
In a statement, Leatrice Eiseman, Executive Director of the Pantone Color Institute, said:
As we move into a world of unprecedented change, the selection of PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri brings a novel perspective and vision of the trusted and beloved blue color family, encompassing the qualities of the blues, yet at the same time with its violet red undertone, PANTONE 17-3938 Very Peri displays a spritely, joyous attitude and dynamic presence that encourages courageous creativity and imaginative expressions.
For 2021—for only the second time in what was then twenty years—Pantone chose two Colors of the Year: Illuminating (PANTONE 17-5104) and Ultimate Gray (PANTONE 13-0647). The colors resemble the skin of a ripe lemon and wet cement, respectively.
Although gray is often associated as a color symbolic of downcast moods, many people commented that Ultimate Gray doesn’t fall into that category—rather it’s a gray that’s emblematic of practicality and strength. Similarly, far from being frivolous or fleeting, Illuminating yellow calls for energy and positivity.
For the Pantone Color Institute, the combination of the two colors evokes the promise of something happy, solid, and friendly. As they put it: “practical and rock solid but at the same time warming and optimistic.”
The year before that, in 2020, Pantone chose Classic Blue (PANTONE 19-4052). The chosen tone represented an elegant simplicity that conveyed trust and connection, evoking a state of reflection, and reminiscent of the infinite sky and sea.
As technological advancement continues at a rapid rate, it's easy to understand why we gravitate toward honest, simple colors that offer us the promise of protection. Familiar and safe, Classic Blue is said to have a calming, relaxing presence.
In a press release about the color choice, Eiseman commented:
"We are living in a time that requires trust and faith. It is this kind of constancy and confidence that is expressed by PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue, a solid and dependable blue hue we can always rely on... Imbued with a deep resonance, Classic Blue provides an anchoring foundation. A boundless blue evocative of the vast and infinite sky, Classic Blue encourages us to look beyond the obvious to expand our thinking; challenging us to think more deeply, increase our perspective and open the flow of communication.”
