A logo for 35 dollars: the origin of the Swoosh.

In 1971, Phil Knight, one of the founders of Nike, needed a logo for his new line of athletic footwear. He turned to Carolyn Davidson, a graphic design student who accepted the assignment for $2 an hour. Upon completion, she was paid $35 for the design.

Davidson created several proposals, but it was a simple, curved stroke that caught Knight's eye. The now famous Swoosh symbolizes the wing of Nike, the Greek goddess of victory.

Fun fact: years later, Knight compensated Davidson with company stock that would eventually be worth millions.

Evolution of the Swoosh: from a simple stroke to a worldwide symbol.

Although the initial logo was accompanied by the name "Nike", over time the Swoosh acquired enough strength to stand alone. The simplicity and dynamism of the design fit perfectly with the brand's values: speed, movement and overcoming.

With campaigns like "Just Do It", Nike turned that line into something more than a graphic symbol: an emotional emblem that connects with the public's attitude.

Beyond design: the power of emotional branding.

The success of the Nike logo is not only due to its shape. Behind it are decades of brand building supported by storytelling, iconic athletes and social campaigns that connect with the spirit of competition and self-improvement.
