About the final project for: Brand Identity Design: Expressing Visual Meaning

Brand Identity Design: Expressing Visual Meaning

“Well that takes us to the end of the course, folks! I hope that these lessons have helped you create a brand identity you can’t wait to share with your client or customer and that you feel inspired by the possibilities for your brand. Researching what makes your brand special, understanding your audience and starting the project with a concise creative brief will certainly set you on the right path to creating the best design outcome, so don’t be tempted to skip this step! Uncovering inspiring keywords that encapsulate your brand will really help when it comes to generating ideas for your designs. Be sure to avoid generic terms such as ‘professional’, ‘honest’, ‘authentic’ as these won’t help you tell a compelling story visually. Instead, use a thesaurus to dig deeper and brainstorm words associated with your brand.

Feel free to sketch ideas that come to mind or research first and find visual inspiration that can generate ideas. Create your mood boards with focus, clearly organising your references into ideas for logo, brand mark, colours, typography etc. This will help explain your thought process to the client when it comes to presenting. It’s best to focus on one clear concept rather than trying to cram in multiple ideas. Don’t be afraid to keep things simple, a clear focus always leads to better design outcomes. When it comes to designing your logo, get your ideas down quickly and resist the temptation to finess. The aim is to explore as many ideas as possible in your given time frame. When you feel you have enough designs, take a break and then revisit your designs with fresh eyes and ask yourself which ideas best answer the brief as well as make visually pleasing logo formations.
Don’t worry if you’re struggling for ideas, use your mood boards for inspiration and try out the action verbs to generate new concepts. Choose the best logo to refine and then present to the client. Creating a secondary brand mark is a really great way to add variation and flexibility to your brand designs. Don’t add anything new into the secondary mark, it should be a condensed version of the primary logo so first look at what you can take away or shorten. Choosing the right colours can transform your designs. Make your choices based on colour psychology and review your colour choices so that you have lights, medium tones and dark tones to ensure your colours will have enough contrast.
Once you have your logo assets and colours designed, think about the best way to bring these to life within mockups - it really can make or break your designs being signed off by the client! This exercise might also help you think about which assets you will design for your brand once the route is signed off.
Extend your brand world further with a typographic style and decorative elements. This is where you can really have some fun with your brand and create a flexible system that keeps delighting the audience. Customer experience is so important and the more you can create to leave a lasting impression the better! There are so many different options when it comes to design assets - explore brand stationery such as business cards, stickers, notebooks, tissue paper as well as digital design for websites and social media. Even brand apparel such as T-shirts is possible! Have fun and go big! I would love to see your own designs and how you bring your concepts to life. Please don’t hesitate to share on the forum and ask for feedback. Upload your work by clicking on the "Create your project" button above. I’ll do my best to reply as often as I can, as a mum of two and business owner this may not be immediate, but nevertheless I will try my best to answer you as much as I can. The process of sharing can seem scary but it’s essential for growing and learning as a designer so don’t be afraid! We all need feedback and pointing in the right direction from time to time so as well as uploading your work, try to help other students who might be struggling with thoughtful comments. This may be the end of the course but hopefully the start of a connection - come find Mumfolk Studio on Instagram and stay up to date with our latest projects on our website. Bye for now and happy designing! ”
