About the final project for: Artistic Resources for Powerful Branding Design

Artistic Resources for Powerful Branding Design

“Thank you for joining me and allowing me to share my story and process with you. As artists and creators at heart, designers often struggle between the artfulness that truly represents them and the design that serves the client. The minimalist approach to logo design can often feel restrictive and boring. You might feel it lacks character and is too limiting to do anything truly creative with like you’re caught between two different worlds. You’re not alone! I hope this course has helped you to bend the rules to develop a brand identity that is as minimalist as possible so that you can maximize the brand’s graphic language and extensions. For the course project, the possibilities are really endless. Choose a project that reflects your own personal vision and personality. Let me show you an example of what I expect to see from your project: The Logo Choose the logo you’ve decided to work with. Explore Your Logo Create a visual system around it by discovering the framework and boundaries you’ve established. Include your rationale that always leads back to the logo’s or company’s meaning and creative brief.

Go Further Apply it to some applications for context (you can use a mock-up or two for this). Then put it in a PDF presentation format, including your rationale for doing what you did that leads the viewer from concept to creation to application logically.
One lesson that I’ve learned on my twisty road is that it’s okay to be different, as long as you’re different for a reason. Be a rebel WITH a clue. Eventually, you’ll reach your destination. Please, while making your project, don’t be afraid to try new things! Get creative. I encourage you to take things to the next level. Think outside the box, be a “rule-breaker”! Be sure to inject your own sense of style and self into everything you do. If you create with abandon while also creating within some solid rules, there’s no doubt your designs will be successful. Once everything is ready, share your project in the forum! I will be giving you feedback as soon as I can, but please be patient, it could take a while. Meanwhile, I encourage you to look at what your fellows are doing and give them feedback. In the end, we always learn a lot from each other. So, I strongly encourage you to be active in the forum and help others as they’ll help you. I can’t wait to see your project! See you soon.”

“ Final Project That's it, everybody, I've to get back to work. Thanks so much for allowing me to share my experiences, insights, and hard lessons with you. It's been an honor. We've covered the differences between art and design, and how they can coexist. Why boundaries are your friend and how to extract and inject a sense of artfulness into your brand designs. That way, you can inject your own sense of style into everything you do. If you create within abandon within some solid rules, there's no doubt your design will be successful. Although you can use the BLDG-25 case study as a guide t...”

Adam G is the co-founder and creative director of TRÜF Creative, a Los Angeles design studio specializing in visual identity and illustration. He has designed identities and visuals for adidas, DreamWorks, University of California, Indiegogo, and countless other companies that span from arts and media, tech and finance, to culture and education.

Prior to starting TRÜF Creative in 2006, Adam was a creative director at advertising and marketing agencies in New York City working for companies like American Express, HP, Citibank, Showtime, and Kraft. After 15 years of design, strategy, positioning, internal politics, and way too many conference calls, he finally realized that his true passion was creating visual identities where artfulness and strategy could coexist. He calls his minimalist style of visual design “Messy Modernism,” born from his love of geometry, patterns, negative space, Bauhaus, Miró, and a little too much caffeine.
