About the final project for: Introduction to Mosaic Artwork

Introduction to Mosaic Artwork

“Thank you for choosing my course to begin your journey in mosaic making. Now it’s time for you to make your own final project. And remember to make it your own. Perhaps you’ll choose a different type of fish altogether? Maybe you’ll add a water lily or a floating leaf? Whatever design you choose, remember what I taught you and put what you’ve learned into practice. So before I say goodbye, let’s go over the steps you’ll need to follow to complete your final project. When you’ve decided on your motives and found your references, always make a few rough sketches to work out your overall composition before you settle on your final design. Be aware of which direction the light in your image is coming from. This will help you decide where to add light- and shadow-effects that will give your image life and depth.

When it’s time to draw the grid on the final design, remember that you can also do this on a computer and print it out without damaging your original drawing.
Then you must copy your design square by square onto a full scale cartoon and draw over it in a strong permanent felt pen. Remember this will get wet later!
When you select your tesserae, don’t limit your palette to your tile selection. Remember that you can mix and modify the colours by placing two different hues next to each other. Try to think of the flow of your tessare, the andamento, as a painter’s brush strokes. Think carefully about how the flow of your lines will affect your design. Always begin with the most difficult parts and work your way through to the final perimeter of the mosaic.
When you come to divide the final piece remember to not follow the outlines but instead make a dog tooth pattern to help hide the joints.
Time to fix the mosaic pieces onto the board with cement. Remember to lay them out first to check that they fit perfectly.
And finally I showed you how to finish off the surface with a proper grouting. Be very careful when working with grouts, and don’t worry if a tile drops out, just pick it up and stick it back later.
As you can see, all this comes very naturally to me, and with enough practice it will come naturally to you too.
Remember that you can also learn from other students. Share your own tips and experiences in the forum, and I will check in from time to time to answer your questions. It’s been a real pleasure to share my art and my process with you and I’m really looking forward to seeing what you will make for your final project. Keep creating! ”
