E-Commerce Fundamentals: Launching an Online Store from Scratch
“Now you have come to the end of your course. I really hope you have enjoyed learning about eCommerce and its principles with me and all the knowledge I shared with you makes you feel ready to build your very own eCommerce business. We have been on a journey to understand more about your business proposition, starting with understanding your business goals and objectives, identifying your brand USP’s and then to mapping your target market. Once we have worked out this, we then researched your competitors, your content planning and started thinking about your marketing plans for post-launch. These steps are essential in helping your brand to make the right choices on appropriate platforms, content, design and strategy. As for the Final Project, I want you to put all the pieces together and compose your own plan using the tasks you have worked on throughout the course as the building blocks of your eCommerce business plan. You can use my completed plan as a template or framework for your own. You come a long way already and all you need know is to piece it all together. Below you can find a few tips on what to do (and not to do) when planning out your project: Do's - Upsell any relevant products you can at all stages of the customer journey by adding recommended items on product pages or at the cart stage. - Offer as many payment providers as possible to make it as easy as possible to buy. Consider shop now pay later options and ability to shop in instalments to further incentivise purchases. - Feature best selling products on your most popular pages to attract the customer as soon as they land on the site - Include reviews and customer feedback relating to both products and services. Potential customers will trust another person’s feedback over the brand many times over. - Drive home your brand USP’s across all channels, offering free worldwide shipping? State that on the top banner on your website, on your ads and in your email footer. Tell people why they simply can’t miss out on shopping with you. Don’ts - Introduce too many steps between the customer and the product. - Confuse the customer with too many messages on your site, be as clear and concise as possible and if allow the product to speak for itself where you can. - Overpromise and under deliver. Be clear about your delivery lead times and don’t underestimate your timings. This is a sure-fire way to engage your customers. Remember that research is key, there is so much out there already it’s really important to ensure you are clued up on what’s out there are make sure you offer something even better and most importantly unique. In the last year, we have seen growth online explode so remember no business is too small (or too wacky) to be translated for online. My advice is to give it a go and find ways around any problems you may find. The world really is your oyster! Please share your ideas and insights with the group, it’s great to learn from each other when going through this journey as this can be so important to growing your own and each other’s businesses. I will aim to respond to as many of your questions as possible however with my businesses and young children I have to manage my time accordingly. Bye! ”
