“In this lesson, we're going to be working with charcoal. We're going to start with some very simple exercises to become familiar with this medium. So when I'm working with charcoal, I usually work with cartridge paper. So I have 120 gram cartridge paper. That's the minimum that I would use when I'm working with charcoal. I really have a texture to it, but also not be too smooth. So I've sometimes used cartridge paper before that's almost so smooth that the charcoal doesn't really have any kind of grip to it.
