“In this lesson I am going to try to convey some basic notions of understanding the shape through the idea of the head seen as an egg and how light falls on that shape. We will see how to differentiate light, midtones and shadows. I will also explain to you how the use of a wider or more compressed value range influences the dramatic or more natural effect that light can give on a subject. We will talk about what "simultaneous contrast" is, and how to control this visual effect to improve the coherence of our work.”

“The Light In this lesson, we're going to talk about the basics of light. I think understanding the basic principles of the physics of light is really important. Why? Because we don't know how we see things. Here we have a famous image by James Gurney, that's explaining simultaneous contrast. Simultaneous contrast is the effect the surrounding values have on a value and how depending what's next to it, something can look lighter or darker.
