About the final project for: Realistic Portraits Using Charcoal

Realistic Portraits Using Charcoal

“We have reached the end of this course. I hope you have been able to get some ideas to help you improve your work. We are going to review the trip we have made throughout the course. We start by talking about some of my influences, both ancient and contemporary. Remember the books that I have recommended, as they can be of great help. We took a look at the materials I have used for this project and the opportunities and options they provided us. I personally am quite flexible, and I think that many of the concepts that we have discussed are applicable to these materials and also to others, so if you don't have the same, work with what you have and it works for you, just with a simple pencil and a incredible things can be achieved on paper. Analyzing the basic structure of the egg is very useful, and mixing this idea with abstract analysis is a very efficient combo. If you can, do hundreds of these exercises and you will see that it comes out faster and better. We have studied the basic operation of light, and remember the simultaneous contrast, this idea helps a lot not to fall into the trap and confuse or disorganize the values when we only think about what we see. Continue studying the plans of each of the features of the face. I invite you to analyze the works of the classical masters, and you will see that their paintings and drawings are built on top of this understanding of structure. Finally, we have made the portrait putting in common all the ideas studied separately. All of these concepts are complex, and there are different levels of understanding for each of them. I have studied this for years, and am still at it. Be clear about the objectives you want to work on in each of your portraits, and try to be clear about what decisions you are making. Focused practice and repetition are a very important factor in being able to improve. Your final project When facing your final project, you can use the same reference as me or you can take another photograph, but remember, it must have interesting lighting. With all the knowledge acquired in the first three units, follow the phases we saw in Unit 4 to develop your own project. Remember to share in the forum both the final result of your portrait and the different stages or steps that have led you to it (the Big Shape, the work on the different parts of the face, the work of dark and shadows, lights and midtones , hightlights and finally the finished portrait). To share your work, click on "Create your project". It is very good that you share it with other colleagues, since that way we can learn from each other. If you have any questions you can write in the forum, I will respond as soon as possible. I encourage you that, if a colleague has any questions, also share your ideas and give them your opinion if you know how to solve it. I have learned a lot both studying and teaching. When solving someone's doubt, you have to put yourself in their place and solve the problem, and that problem at one point or another is something that can happen to you, so teaching also helps a lot. That won't take me away from my opinion too. Greetings, and to work!”

“Final Project We've come to the end of this Domestika course. I hope you learned the techniques and the necessary methodology to create your own portrait. Before saying goodbye, I'd like to make a recap of every step you took to create your final project. First, I told you about my experience in art and about my work at the Barcelona Academy of Art. You've seen my influences and how I conceptualize art as an ever-evolving process. Before starting, I showed you the necessary materials and how to use them correctly. We learned about the basic elements of the head and face structures. We learn...”
