I don't like to use colors directly out of the tube. I usually like to mute them. And the best way to do this is to look at a color wheel and you're going to choose a colors complementary color to mix it with. A complementary color is just a color that is across from each other on the color wheel. I'm going to be painting with green, but I wanna mute that green a little bit.
