About the final project for: Calligraphy and Gestural Lettering for Packaging Projects

Calligraphy and gestural lettering for packaging projects

“We have reached the end of the course! Thank you very much for accompanying me. I hope that my lessons and advice will help you when carrying out your lettering projects. Do not forget that each project is unique and that what we saw in this course is a base that you can use with your own style. I share the steps you must follow to carry out and share your project: Look around Become an obsessive observer of typographic shapes and styles. Look for shapes on labels, on t-shirts, on posters, on the street, in the supermarket, wherever. Observing will give you tools to solve different challenges and learn from other people who have explored different paths. Structure Think and sketch base structure ideas that contain the essential elements of your composition. Don't settle for just one test. In this instance, you can explore variants and play with axes, reading levels, directions, and margins.

First strokes I chose the tool that you like the most and wrote your signs. This is a good stage to explore tools that can give different results. Try different strokes and play with the proportions of the signs. It is not necessary that your first stroke is the final one. You can use different parts from different scans to make your final drawing later.
Redraw in pencil Starting from your exploration, redraw your signs using a tracing paper. Moving the tracing in different directions as you draw the signs will allow you to correct slant, spacing, and sign placement for a better result. You can repeat this process as many times as you want, trying different finishes or correcting new areas of the composition. Also define and draw the ornaments, planning the space that your lettering will occupy in the composition.
Inking When you have defined your lettering and ornaments, ink them on a new tracing paper. Even in this instance you can continue correcting details of spacing or endings. Take advantage of the use of tracings to separate the ornaments into layers as we saw in the lessons and be able to edit them more freely.
Digitization Scan your inks in high resolution and give them maximum contrast in Photoshop so you can vectorize with good detail. Remember to scan some of your original strokes to add texture to your lettering. With all the material ready, vectorize it in Illustrator and assemble the display of the label, adding the color and details you want.
Mock-up Done, now to plant your label in a mock-up. Take advantage of and edit the mock-up to generate your own image, with different views or personal details. Once finished, export the images and share it with the community.
Share your final project with all of us by clicking "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result of your project and the steps that have led you to it. It would be great if you could show me an image of each phase and add a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. You can also upload your mock-up to Instagram showing all the attitude of your design. If you want, tag me so I can share it on my networks. You can also use the hashtag #AguspizarroDomestika and #LetteringExpresivoAgusPizarro to meet other classmates. I also want to invite you to actively participate in the forum, both sharing your progress and asking questions or giving advice and trying to help the rest of the community. I'm looking forward to seeing your progress! I will try to spend as much time as possible on the forum, but please be patient because there will be times when I have professional commitments and it will take me a while to respond. See you in the forum! ”

“We have reached the end of the course, thank you for trusting me and joining me on this spiritual journey. I hope you had as good a time as I did experimenting with expressive lyrics. The practice of hand lettering in combination with the possibilities that technology offers us generates in every project I face a new opportunity to observe, explore and learn. As I told you in the first lessons, make friends with the error. Don't lose your enthusiasm and the curiosity to explore with new tools, test your gestures and train your eye to the max. Remember that this is not a one-way process, but...”
