“Cross referencing This lesson is cross-referencing. A really important part of my process is photographing my painting and bringing it up on the screen next to my reference photo, at the same scale. This is really useful for me, it really helps me to decide on where I'll take my painting next. I can look at my reference and make comparisons, decide if I want to bring my painting closer to the reference or if I like the way it looks now. If I want to pull it away from the reference and change it. So, if I'm looking at the two images together now, I can see instantly a whole heap of differenc...”

It was the birth of his first son in 2005 that prompted him to reconnect with his artistic ideas and explore oil painting. Shortly after deciding to pursue his dream of becoming a portrait artist, Alan Coulson was awarded a BP Portrait Award from The National Portrait Gallery in London. The exposure and awards he has received have given rise to a successful career in portraiture with clients including The New York Times, The Sunday Times Magazine, Bloomberg Markets Magazine, Carlton Books, The Chronicle Review, Club Wembley, and more.
