7 Ways to Simplify an Image in Visual Communication

Discover how to simplify an image to communicate a graphic message clearly
It is essential to know the basic notions of graphic communication to create a clear visual message. Graphic designer Silvio Díaz Labrador (@silvio_diaz) shares eight basic ways to create a simplified image that retains a high degree of information.
Whether you are working in illustration, on an editorial project–such as a poster, or designing icons or brand logos, these practices will be useful. We encourage you to experiment with them all.

Reference image
Your reference is the basis of your project and can either be a photo or an intricate illustration. You need to analyze it to simplify it. To illustrate this idea, Silvio uses the image of a toucan.

Linear drawing
The easiest way to simplify the picture is through lines. Try to capture the highest level of detail possible by retrieving the lines of the image.

Silhouette
This is an easy process as you simply keep the outline of the image and leave out the rest.

Negative Space
Add the background to create an attractive effect that brings out the shape of the elements. Graphic designers often use this resource.

Shading
Apply shading to bring out the essential lines of the image. This type of treatment was used iconically in poster illustrations of Che Guevara.

Photo negative
Turn the image into its negative, so that the dark lines become white.

Fragmentation
Once you have applied the negative treatment, add the background so that it becomes part of the image. You get the effect of a cut-out image.

Geometric
Create a simplified image using straight or geometric lines, making sure the subject does not lose its details.
