Tutorial Communication: keys to successful presentations
Whether it is virtual or face-to-face, learn how to give the best presentation with these tips from Cristian Salomoni
Communicating is a complex job that goes beyond what is said: achieving it also involves mastering body language techniques that reaffirm the intention of the message, and that complete the objective of transmitting ideas and emotions.
Cristian Salomoni (@cristian_salomoni), a criminal expert in non-verbal communication, states that life is based on communication and our relationship with others, and that knowing how to express ourselves is basic to fulfill all kinds of personal and professional goals.
In this tutorial, Cristian shares with you key tips about your nonverbal communication that will help you to make successful presentations, no matter if they are face-to-face or virtual. Enjoy it below!
IN-PERSONNEL PRESENTATIONS
1. Take care of your facial expression
The face is the vehicle of our emotions, so Cristian recommends that you be aware of everything you do with it when presenting.
2. Don't forget to smile
People will perceive you as a friendly person who is passionate about the topic you are talking about. In addition, you will generate empathy with the audience.
3. Look at your audience
If you maintain eye contact with the people you are addressing, you will be able to connect with them more easily.
4. Use your hands
Avoid making the mistake of putting them in your pockets, as the message conveyed by hiding them is that of someone who is not entirely happy to be in that place.
5. Gestures at the level of the navel
That's the area where we naturally gesticulate when something matters to us and we are passionate about it, as well as when we are stating something with certainty.
6. Avoid creating distractions
Don't use gestures and movements that steal your audience's attention, such as constantly adjusting your hair, playing with a ring, removing lint from your clothes, etcetera.
7. Modulate your voice
The voice is a very important instrument in the mission of communicating a message. Therefore, Cristian suggests that you should always use a direct and friendly tone, keep a constant rhythm and use volume variations to emphasize specific ideas you want to highlight.
8. Lean on pauses and silences
Resting your voice for a couple of seconds every so often will help you not to get stuck when speaking, as well as to avoid constantly resorting to crutches.
9. Maintain an upright posture
Your posture reflects the degree of confidence you have about yourself, therefore, maintaining a firm posture helps to convey charisma, determination and leadership.
10. Dress according to the profile of your audience
Personal image is the first thing people perceive when you speak to them, so it is important that you always choose an outfit that helps you connect with the personality of your audience.
VIRTUAL PRESENTATIONS
1. Look for the perfect background
What may go unnoticed in person, stands out when it comes to virtual presentations. Use neutral and well-lit backgrounds for your video calls.
2. Emphasize your gestures
To shorten the natural distance of a virtual call, try to emphasize your gestures when you speak, so that it is easier for the people who see and hear you to receive your message with the right intention.
3. Gesture at chest level
Unlike in-person presentations, in virtual presentations Cristian recommends that you move your hands at chest height, so that they are visible to the camera so that your audience has more tools to interpret your message.
4. Look directly into the webcam
Avoid looking everywhere when you are on a video call, and always try to direct your gaze towards the webcam, so that everyone can feel that you are connecting directly with them. Cristian suggests that you stick a picture or a sticker near the camera to make it easier for you to focus.
5. Nod to convey that you are paying attention
Cristian recommends this gesture when receiving comments and interacting with your audience in virtual calls.
6. Empower yourself with the clothes you choose
How you dress for a virtual call directly affects how you feel during the call, so Cristian gives the advice to always wear attire that makes you feel alert, awake and ready to work and interact with other people.
