“Many of the sashiko patterns I stitch are traditional designs that date back over 400 years ago, to the Edo era. I love how many of these patterns are derived and inspired by the Japanese people, their culture, and their surroundings. The motifs they created were sometimes representative of the stories of their lives. Some patterns were even used as talismans, meant to bring protection when worn. Many of these stitches also had a deeper meaning and were stitched into the garments.
