“ Scumbling the Main Character In the last video, we worked on the background. In this lesson, we'll work on the main character. I'll now use a technique called scumbling to start my character. Scumbling is a technique where you apply thin layers of paint over another color or an underpainting. The colors I'll use are white, Naples yellow, yellow ochre, cad red light, burnt sienna, and a dark brown called Van Dyke brown. This will give me a good range of the dark shadow values and colors and also work it up into a highlight, which will be a warmer, brighter value. When I start scumbling, I ...”

Bob Dobbie, also known as Bob Dob, is a painter from Hermosa Beach, California. After being diagnosed with cancer at 12 years old, he was drawn toward music and art and went on to play in a band for over a decade, which had a big influence on his style. Bob later completed a BFA in illustration at Otis College of Art and Design and, after graduating, worked as an illustrator for clients including Epitaph Records, Intel, American Airlines, Random House Publishing, and Disney.
