Now, prepare the painting surface by applying 2 coats of gesso onto the wood panel or canvas. When the surface is ready, use transfer paper to copy the drawing onto it. Then, prepare the underpainting using black and white gesso. This allows you to create a whole range of tonal values that will show through the color.
