About the final project for: Pop Culture Oil Painting with a Surreal Twist

Pop Culture Oil Painting with a Surreal Twist

“Congratulations. You have reached the end of this Domestika course. Thank you for choosing me to lead you through the world of painting! It's time to work on your project. This could mean finishing the work you started while completing the exercises, or you could start a brand-new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell me if you have any doubts. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. Let’s revisit the necessary steps to complete your project: First, find the concept you want to paint and gather references. Once you complete the research, draw some sketches of the character in different settings or situations. This is a great way to collect ideas until you see one that works best. Then, refine your favorite sketch and develop a detailed drawing.

Now, prepare the painting surface by applying 2 coats of gesso onto the wood panel or canvas.
When the surface is ready, use transfer paper to copy the drawing onto it.
Then, prepare the underpainting using black and white gesso. This allows you to create a whole range of tonal values that will show through the color.
When you're done with the black and white underpainting, it's time to use color! For the landscape, you will work from the background to the foreground with an atmospheric perspective. Then, you can paint the main character by applying the scumbling technique.
Finally, glaze or varnish the painting and take a nice photo of it!
I can’t wait to see the project you come up with, so don’t forget to share it in the forum. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". I‘ll be more than happy to answer any of the questions you might have along the way! I'll try getting back to you as soon as possible. In the meantime, participate in the forum, comment on others’ work, and interact with the community! See you there.”

“ Final Project You reached the end of the course. In this lesson, I'll give you some tips to help you with your artistic journey. When I'm sketching out ideas, they're rough ideas. They are not refined images. It's good to put things in your sketchbook so you can go to revisit them. When I apply the gesso, the first coat is important. Do not put too much down. You want a nice even coat so it's easier to sand. While doing your tight drawing, do as many details as you possibly can in the beginning stages. This way you won't make compositional decisions when you begin painting. When underpain...”
