About the final project for: Pop Culture Character Painting in Photoshop

Pop Culture Character Painting in Photoshop

“We've reached the end of this course. Thank you so much for joining me and I hope you learn lots of things today. It is now time to start working on your final project. This could mean finishing the illustration you started while following the exercises or you could start a brand new project! Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. To help you, I will sum up here the main steps you need to follow to complete your project. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It'd be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way. This will help me understand your creative process and guide you better if you need advice. The Reference Choose a great character from a movie or television show that you love, and find high-quality reference material. I suggest you gather several images so you can work with different angles and colour schemes for the same character and background. Then, place your reference imagery on your Photoshop canvas so that it will work effectively as a portrait. Initial Sketch Pencil in the main features of the character (whether tracing or purely by eye) and quickly paint in a rough background to establish the colour and atmosphere.

The Portrait Hide the original reference and work from a duplicate on either the left or right side (depending on the hand you draw with), painting the main portrait, first on a layer below the pencils, then later on one above them as you add more detail.
Once you're done with the main portrait, move progressively to the character’s hair and any other details (clothing, accessories, hands, etc.).
Finally, return to the background and add effects and texture.
Exporting Think about whether your piece would benefit from a slightly different or tighter crop and get it ready for sharing on social media and/or your portfolio.
And you're done! Congratulations! Upload your Final Project to the forum and get involved with your peers. I’ll check in from time to time, answering questions and giving some guidance when I can. Show me your own unique interpretation, I’d love to see the steps of your process! Thank you again and see you soon!”

Having followed the lessons, you all have seen that creating a character portrait that evokes the atmosphere of a film is easily achievable. Now I'd like to recap some of the key steps for your project. But before I do, don't forget to experiment and take chances. Creating your final project is your chance to have fun. First off, is best to start by sourcing high-quality reference images. It's useful to find several e...”
