Visual Storytelling with Hand-Lettering and Illustration
“You have now come to the end of this Domestika course. Congratulations and thank you again for participating! Now it's time to work on your own project. I would like to summarize the most important steps that you should consider when designing your poster as generally as possible and give you a few useful tips. For both this and other projects, it is extremely helpful to have a personal collection of sources of inspiration that you can always turn to and that is always evolving. So always be open, observe your surroundings, get inspired by everything and take notes and photos of it. You then use your reference material to create a mood board for your typographic poster and choose an appropriate quote. Feel free to experiment with different font styles, compositions, and color palettes to find the right aesthetic. Add illustrations to your lettering to convey the story you want your poster to tell.

“final project We have now come to the end of the course. Thank you for the participation! I hope you take away not only a great poster, but also knowledge that will help you your journey into the world of hand lettering and continue visual storytelling. I hope I could inspire you both with my own creations and my sources of inspiration, such as old signs, pennants, packaging and books. Look for your own inspiration in many different places and observe your surroundings with open-mindedness and curiosity. It is best to take notes and photos of what piques your interest. Be it specific quotes...”

David Leutert
A course by David Leutert
David Leutert is a freelance illustrator and lettering artist based in Berlin. Born and raised in Bavaria, he became interested in drawing at a very young age. However, it was thanks to cartoons, comics, cover art, and skateboard graphics that he realized that this was his true passion. After completing his training in media design, he studied design at the Lutheran University of Applied Sciences, Nuremberg. He then began working over the summer as a T-shirt designer for Adidas, before moving to New York to pursue a master's degree in Illustration at the School of Visual Arts.
In hand typography, his strong suit is contrasting outlines with limited color palettes. To perfect his lettering technique, he also dabbles in the ancient craft of sign painting. His clients include brands such as Adobe, Coach, Dropbox, MTV, and Pepsi, and his work has won awards from the Society of Illustrators, the Art Directors Club, and American Illustration as well as Communication Arts and 3x3 magazines, among others.
