About the video: The Illusion of Transparency 2

Overview

“Moving on to the computer, I will do the same exercise, making shapes in 2-dimensional composition appear 3-dimensional, exaggerating the idea of spatial illusion. I will experiment with different middle colors to make the layer arrangement appear to change. This experiment teaches us how to use color to create a visual hierarchy—an arrangement of design elements in a composition that is specifically ordered, where the viewer’s attention moves around the composition in ways determined by the designer.”

In this video lesson Richard Mehl addresses the topic: The Illusion of Transparency 2, which is part of the Domestika online course: Color Theory: Exploration & Application. Learn how to apply color theory in graphic design and create stunning visual effects..

We're going to now look at the illusion of transparency, the second of the Joseph Albers color experiments. In the first experiment, we tried to make three colors look like two, make five colors look like six. We worked with monochromatic colors. We worked with paper. We worked digitally. We made three colors look like four in the end, which was kind of interesting, all in an effort to kind of prove the concept of simultaneous contrast. Now we're going to move on to the solution of transparency. ...”
