For subjects for portrait painting, I like to rely on images that I find on the Internet. These are mostly selfies and the range of quality of selfies can vary quite a bit. I like to use an app called Sketchy. This is a platform where people upload their own personal images and artists who are on the platform can then do paintings from them.
