Tatiana Nedialkova (@softerandwild) is a UK-based multi-disciplinary artist with a background in graphic design and illustration. In 2016, she founded home and kitchen textiles brand, Softer and Wild, for which she combines patterns and color to create beautiful homeware products.
In her Domestika course, she not only teaches you how to design and create your own product line but also—importantly—how to market and sell your products. One essential part of that is product photography.
In this free download, Tatiana shares ideas and examples to set up a shoot for your product photos at home. Packed with inspirational images from layout ideas to behind-the-scenes set-up shots, in it you’ll discover tips for choosing a background, experimenting with props, composition, and more to create stylish and eye-catching product shots.
Photo shoots: Home vs studio
When your product is ready to market, the next step is showcasing it to your customers. And good photography is crucial to catch your audience's attention, but for many smaller businesses or freelancers, hiring a professional photographer and studio may be too expensive.
If you do go with the home photo shoot option, it's advisable to invest in some good photography equipment. It doesn’t have to be top of the range: just a decent camera, a tripod, and perhaps some basic lighting. For many people, this typically works out cheaper over time.

Ideas and examples to shoot product photography at home
To start, Tatiana explains, you'll want to clear a space in your home and try to position yourself next to a window, so you’ve got good natural light. Take a few different pictures of the same product using different crops and compositions.
It's essential to have some nice photographic backdrops for your products, which you can buy easily online. They don’t have to be very big, so you can move them around easily. Get a small collection of different textures, and keep them neutral so they can be used for future projects—Tatiana shares some of her favorite websites to source materials in the guide.
The resource is full of examples for using props as a way to complement, enhance, and not overwhelm your products. An excellent tip when styling your products is, of course, to experiment and have lots of fun doing your photo shoot, but also to keep everything simple.
