Today we want to share with you a free guide to drawing realistic and dynamic hand gestures! We break down the complexities behind the drawing process and provide you with the tools to bring your characters to life through this small, but captivating detail.

Without a doubt, hands are some of the most challenging things to draw, so let’s make sense of the construction of the hand first.

The most important components start with the palm, the thumb, and the fingers. Take notice of how each finger has three sections to it. This is the same as on the palm, take a look at yours for reference, and try to find those three elements.

Of course, as the fingers bend things may look more complicated but don’t worry! The fingers are still built according to those three sections we mentioned earlier.

You should also remember to always be aware of the palm, and keep in mind how fingers look when you have foreshortening. Once again, you should try to use your own hand as a reference because without one it can be difficult to know how much of the finger to draw or which shape to aim for.

It's important to look at references, and to practice constructions like these. But these simple steps help understand how hands work.
