Painting and photography are two visual languages that can be combined to create surreal universes that awaken our creativity and imagination.
For Brazilian documentary filmmaker, director of photography, photographer, and visual artist Carine Wallauer (@wallauercarine), combining photo records with watercolor painting techniques allows her to experiment with new emotions and play with different tones and textures in her art.
To inspire you to create your own photographs, Carine has created a list of contemporary artists who color photos with different types of paint and who inspire her. Check them out below!
Ellen Rogers
Ellen Rogers is a British analog photographer who prints and colors her work by hand. Aside from her more intimate photographs and portraits, Ellen works as a fashion photographer and has shot for clients including Vogue, VICE, Tank, i-D, Alice Temperley, and many others.
The photographer has also worked for institutions such as the British Journal of Photography and the Ashmolean Museum. She currently teaches fashion photography at Bournemouth Arts University.
Shae Detar
Shae Detar is an expert in creating surreal images using a unique process where she paints over her own photographs by hand. Shae's creations blend photography with painting, exaggerating the colors of both the landscapes and the characters depicted, taking them out of reality and into other worlds.
Her work has been published in numerous magazines, such as Vogue Italia, Vogue Holland, Marie Claire Italia, Interview Magazine, i-D, VICE, Dazed, Grazia, The New Yorker, Elle Uk, Marie Claire, The Huffington Post, New York Magazine, Forbes, among others.
Paulina Surys
Paulina is an award-winning photographer who loves to mix techniques, combining her background in art with her experience as a photographer to create fascinating images. Her creative process consists of manipulating images that capture routine activities and ordinary objects from day-to-day life, as well as using analog photographs that she takes herself.
Alexandra Valenti
Alexandra lives in the United States, between Austin and Los Angeles. Her photographic eye is utterly unique. Her compositions mix vibrant and dreamy images with fascinating colors and show people interacting with nature.
She has worked with Nike, Adidas, Nordstrom, Betsey Johnson, Free People, Urban Outfitters, UNIQLO, New York Magazine, and Vogue Russia, among others. She has also photographed celebrities such as Justin Timberlake, Sam Rockwell, and Minnie Driver.
Rochele Zandavalli
Rochele Zandavalli is a visual artist who mixes techniques, ranging from analog processes to experiments with technologies. As well as using the medium of photography, she also creates drawings, paintings, prints, and uses animation and film.
She holds a master's degree in Visual Poetics from the Institute of Arts of the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and teaches across different university courses. Some of her work features in the Joaquim Paiva Collection of photography on loan to the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro (MAM/RJ), in the Pierre Bessard Collection, in the collections of the Fundação Vera Chaves Barcellos, the Museum of Arts of Rio Grande do Sul - MARGS, and the Museum of Contemporary Art MAC/RS.
