Even though anatomy in expressive portraits doesn't necessarily have to be the main concern, it's good to always check the base form if your painting feels somehow unnatural. To make any lighting seem believable, we need to pay attention to two things. Making sure we know which planes catch the light and having variation in the edges of where the light and shadow meet.
