About the final project for: Urban Illustration with Inking Techniques

Urban Illustration with Inking Techniques

“You have reached the end of this course! Thank you for joining me and allowing me to share my process with you! I hope this course has helped inspire you to work with ink and try your projects. Now it’s time to work on your piece! Go outside and check out the area around you. Look for a building or scenery that inspires you. Maybe try something familiar for a start. Remember to take a deeper look at things, to find beauty in the ordinary and the mundane. You’ll start to see your surroundings in a new way! Don’t forget to look for the interplay of light and shadows in your search for inspiration. Let me show you an example of how I would like to see your course project process: Inspiration and Reference Take your reference; don’t be afraid to crop or resize your photos for better composition. Make sure to take lots of reference photos! You can never have too many, especially if you see something inspiring! Print off one you want to use, or have it on any device with a screen.

The Sketch Remember to start with a rough sketch, establishing your horizon line and the overall perspective. Then, work out the big overall shapes. Once you’ve got that established you can start refining the sketch. Add the details at the end until you’re ready to ink the lines.
The Lines Using your favorite fine liner, draw the final line over your sketch. Don’t be afraid to pencil in more areas as you go along if you find that you are missing some parts. Practice doing smooth lines in one stroke as much as possible, and thicken the lines where needed to make parts of your drawing feel like they are advancing or receding in space. When you’re done, erase any underlying pencil lines you no longer want. Go over any areas that may need another pass with your fine liner.
The Light Ink Wash Mix your light ink wash, light enough to see it but not too dark. Remember to apply in all areas where you’ll be wanting shadows. Start applying it in the largest, broadest areas first, then in any detailed parts last.
The Darker Ink Washes Mix your darker washes and compare them to your light wash. Make sure you have 3 distinct values. Start applying your darker washes to large areas first, and work to establish your overall values. Keep layering, working from larger areas to smaller areas. Work on any details at the end.
If you’re unsure if a value will be too dark, try a lighter wash first. You can always apply more washes to make something darker, but you can’t lighten an area. Have fun! Don’t worry about racing to the end of your project. Take your time, enjoy each step, and learn from the process and the journey. That’s it! You made it! Don’t forget to share your project by clicking the "Create your project" button. Keep track of your progress and take pictures of each step. I’d love to see what you make, and I’m happy to answer any of your questions! I can’t wait to see what you’ll create! See you!”
