Then, I will show you my sketching process and talk through my thoughts as I consider how to simplify the shapes in my reference image. I like to make my sketch on a separate piece of paper. I do this because the gouache is often opaque enough to completely cover my sketch after the first layer of paint and then I can no longer see the sketch. If I make my sketch on a separate sheet of paper, then I can keep it close by and reference it throughout the painting process. ”

What attracted you to this image in the first place? Think about what you love most in the picture. Is it the lighting, the colors? something about the composition, the mood. Pick out your favorite things and think about those because we really want to emphasize those in our painting. Next, we're going to make a sketch to get warmed up and practice with our composition.
