About the final project for: Vibrant Urban Illustration with Gouache Paint

Vibrant Urban Illustration with Gouache Paint

“You’ve now come to the end of this course. Thank you so much for taking the time to dive into the world of gouache with me. For my course project, I chose to draw the shopfront of greengrocers here in London, but you are welcome to choose any shopfront that grabs your attention. Really make it your own! Before saying goodbye, I'd like to show you an example of how I want to see your process: The Reference To begin, find inspiration! You can just go on a walk, or maybe through your travel photos. I encourage you to look at the world around you! Are there any bookstores, greengrocers, flower shops or maybe even a cafe that stands out for you? If you look closely, something will turn your head about a place and will make you want to capture that on canvas.

The Sketch Once you’ve selected your reference pick and you’ve secured your watercolour paper to your work surface, start by using a pencil to sketch the outline of the storefront. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect, it’s about capturing the feeling of the place. It’s about highlighting the things that stand out to you as an artist and that you want to share with a viewer.
The First Layers Start to block in the "ocal colours". These are the base layers that will start to build your artwork on top. At this stage, it's better to use gouache almost like watercolour, letting it flow and fill the paper with a thin wash to remove as much of the white background as possible.
The Artwork Mark out the structure of your painting and create the foundations for you to add textures to, with thicker and more detailed paintwork as your artwork progresses. I usually start with elements surrounding the storefront itself. This helps give the context and set you up for the centre that will become the focal point of the artwork. Once you’ve filled the scary white page with colour, it’s time to add some texture. Make sure you choose the right brush, like a flat angled one for the bricks. Finally, add details to your artwork!
When you’re happy with your artwork, upload it by clicking on "Create your project"! I would love to see what you've created. Remember to share a picture of each step and add a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. I will be giving you feedback as soon as possible, but please be patient. I also encourage you to participate in the forum and comment on each other's work. It’s always great to see how other artists work. I can’t wait to see what you come up with! See you soon. ”

“ Final Project We've come to the end of the course. Thank you for joining me. Gouache is a fantastic medium to learn. It has the benefits of using watercolour, but you get sharp and crisp lines as you layer it up and some wonderful vibrant hues. Other than the paints, you don't need many more materials, a brush, a palette, some water, some pens or sketching equipment, and you're good to go. First, I showed you to create a colour wheel. This is a great way to get familiar with the paints and learn what colours you can make with your palette. We used my favourite technique to create simple g...”
