Sci-Fi Character Creation with Photoshop and ZBrush
“Congratulations! You have reached the end of this course. Thanks for joining me and I hope you feel ready to sculpt your own cybernetic character. Let's revise the necessary steps to complete your project.
- Before jumping into your design, I first recommend getting your head around the software. Refer to the resources I provided in Unit 3 to master the basics behind ZBrush and KeyShot. Then, start researching your references. This is a very important step in establishing solid foundations on which to build your project. Gathering good references will help you to clarify your vision.

- Next, create your basic blockouts in Photoshop. These will provide an example to follow when assembling your mechanical structure.

- Then, use a combination of the default IMM brushes in ZBrush and your chosen 3D kitbash assets to create your design. Place your different elements with care, paying attention to position and size. Don't be afraid to experiment a little. Follow your instincts to make your design unique.
- Once you've pulled the last mechanical elements of your design together, transfer your image to KeyShot and start rendering. Harmonize the lighting of your character with the environment of the base image to achieve a cohesive look.
- Now, it's time for the post-production phase. Bring everything together as one entire unit by using color correction and FX layers. Add any final elements, like logos, to add some branding to your overall image.
