About the final project for: Introduction to Photorealism for Oil Painting

Introduction to Photorealism for Oil Painting

“Thank you for joining me and allowing me to share my story and process with you. I hope this course has helped you transform your creative inspiration into a realistic painting. For the course project, the possibilities are really endless. Choose a project that reflects your own personal style and personality. Please, remember that this technique requires patience! So take your time to paint your project. Let me show you an example of what I expect to see from your project: The Scene Choose and photograph the scene you want to paint. Remember to look for the beauty in the ordinary. Do not focus on well-known landmarks. Also, look for the principles of design we discussed. Locate your point of emphasis and apply the rule of thirds during your composition.

The Grids Print out your photograph and draw your matching grids, in mechanical pencil for thin lines, on your printout and the blank canvas. Or you may choose to use the Photoshop method. Then transfer it to the canvas! Follow the grid method and do the drawing in pencil, starting in the top left corner, adding as much detail as possible. Next, tone your canvas with acrylic paint.
The Painting Match your colors and block in the most prominent areas. Next, add the details and clean up any painting edges as needed. Then add some final glazes to finish defining the atmosphere of the scene.
The Project Once the painting is dry, add a varnish to protect your work. Finally, choose a frame to present your work.
Creating artwork is like lifting weights, the more you work at it, the stronger you get. Therefore, I highly recommend you to keep practicing even if you don’t like the first results. Remember not to compare yourself to me or other artists; only compare your most recent work to your last completed work! Once everything is ready, share your project in the forum! I will be giving you feedback as soon as I can, but please be patient, it could take a while. Meanwhile, I encourage you to look at what your fellows are doing and give them feedback. In the end, we always learn a lot from each other. I can’t wait to see your project! See you soon.”

“ Final Project Thank you for spending this time with me learning the steps to create a photorealistic painting. I hope you found this course fun and challenging. Let's review the steps we discussed to guide you as you create your work. I discussed artists that influenced me and why their work is so important, and we created an image bank for inspiration. We discussed all the materials and tools that we used during this painting. We covered the importance of observation and being open to new ideas, specifically finding beauty in the everyday. We explored composition and the principles of de...”

Christopher Paul Stevens is a contemporary realist painter from Savannah, Georgia. He completed his MFA in painting in 2015. Stevens currently lives in Atlanta, Georgia, where he works full-time out of his studio. His artwork can be seen at galleries in New York, Dublin, Montreal, Portland, and Atlanta, and is featured in the Art Collection at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

His paintings capture the daily routines of 21st century Americans as they progress through their lives. By translating photographs of ordinary affairs into paintings, Stevens elevates the mundane to the monumental. His current work challenges contemporary expectations of art by exploring the relationship between painting and photography, focusing on pushing the boundaries of photorealism by exploring ways of capturing and manipulating the photograph.
