“Final touch up of the monogram And here we are at the last stage of my monogram: retouching. Now I rework the new photocopy. To do this, I start using white paint with a very fine brush and then the black ink with another brush. A drop or two of ox gall may also be helpful to add to the white tempera, which helps to remove the surface tension of the paper. Retouching is for eliminating the smudges that are seen here and there, so the monogram will be perfect when we will reduce it for printing. This monogram has no delicate features. A course by James Clough
James Clough is an English calligraphy artist who's been living and working in Milan for the past 50 years. After studying typographic design at the London College of Printing, he got his start in several publishing houses around London and Milan. In 1979, he made the leap to freelance life, specializing primarily in book cover design.
Throughout his career he has collaborated with numerous advertising agencies designing slogans, logos, and monograms. In 1991, he founded the Associazione Calligrafa Italiana (Italian Calligraphy Association) alongside a group of his peers. He currently teaches calligraphy, typography, and its history at the NABA University in Milan and writes about calligraphy and graphic arts for both Italian and international publications.
