“First processing of the monogram I chose the idea that I like, the sketched idea, and now, through a series of steps, I will carry that idea towards the definitive monogram. During my creative process I'm rarely sure what I want right away, therefore I have to rework the idea several times. So let's get started. I enlarged the sketch on the copier and then on top I attacked with scotch tape a sheet of tissue paper. Remember to keep the less smooth side on top. James Clough
A course by James Clough
James Clough is an English calligraphy artist who's been living and working in Milan for the past 50 years. After studying typographic design at the London College of Printing, he got his start in several publishing houses around London and Milan. In 1979, he made the leap to freelance life, specializing primarily in book cover design.
Throughout his career he has collaborated with numerous advertising agencies designing slogans, logos, and monograms. In 1991, he founded the Associazione Calligrafa Italiana (Italian Calligraphy Association) alongside a group of his peers. He currently teaches calligraphy, typography, and its history at the NABA University in Milan and writes about calligraphy and graphic arts for both Italian and international publications.
