In this course, learn how to handcraft a monogram of your initials, or other letters of your choice, alongside James Clough, calligraphy and typography expert and founder of the Associazione Calligrafica Italiana (Italian Calligraphy Association). James currently teaches at the NABA University in Milan and throughout the years has created logos, ads, and monograms for numerous clients in both Italy and around the world. Start your journey into the world of typography by getting to know your teacher and guide, James Clough, who tells you about his creative career, from London to Italy. Continue with an overview of the analog tools you need for your final project. Discover what a monogram is and the different types that can be found. Then, analyze monogrammed letters from various business cards to understand how this design style has evolved over time.
Now grab a pencil and get to work on your final project. Put your ideas down on paper by drawing a series of quick sketches, choose the one you like best, and continue shaping your monogram.
Once you're done with the base design, add the finishing touches using white tempera paint and India ink. You can also use digital tools for this step if you prefer.

Throughout his career he has collaborated with numerous advertising agencies designing slogans, logos, and monograms. In 1991, he founded the Associazione Calligrafa Italiana (Italian Calligraphy Association) alongside a group of his peers. He currently teaches calligraphy, typography, and its history at the NABA University in Milan and writes about calligraphy and graphic arts for both Italian and international publications.
