Wooden Automata: Bring Sculptures to Life with Movement
“We have reached the end of the course! Thank you so much for being with me this far. During the course, I showed how I build and relate to my works. The simplicity of both materials and movements are the guides I chose to develop my work. The purpose of this course is to show you how to build poetic objects from simple tools and materials. In this regard, I would like to present some important points here: • The wood: don't worry about the wood you are going to use, the important thing at this first moment is to understand that a simple, cheap wood, full of defects can say a lot. If you prefer, delve deeper into the study of woods, so you will be able to recognize the types and define whether or not this adds value to your work. • Tools: Don't limit yourself to tools! You saw that it is possible to build with simple tools, this is encouraging and it is certainly possible to have great results. If later on you feel the need for other tools, they are welcome. • Mechanisms: Try applying the mechanisms we've seen here to generate other types of movement. You can test the mechanisms using cardboard and then build them out of wood or other materials. For me, the mechanics are very intuitive, during construction you learn a lot. • Creativity: creating automata is looking at the world. Realize what comes to you and how these sensations interfere with your life and your way of being. There is no rule for creativity, just experiment. Here's one way to present your final project: Project

“Final Project Thank you for having joined me. I hope I got to show you a bit of how I build and how I relate to my pieces. In them, the simplicity, both in materials and movement, is what I use to guide my work. The mechanisms we used in this course can be applied in different ways, opening up endless possibilities. The most important thing is that you understand how they work and how you can alter the time and speed of their actions. You can build isolated mechanisms to better understand them. You can then think about ways to add another component to create more complex mechanisms. If poss...”
