About the final project for: Innovative Design Systems for Editorial and Digital Media

Innovative Design Systems for Editorial and Digital Media

“Thank you for taking my course! I hope you found it instructive and inspiring. Now it's time for you to start working on your final project. As you’ve seen, some of my projects can be very wide-ranging and complex. I don’t expect you to deliver a complete design system, but I would like to see some coordinated thinking about how you can carry a design philosophy and attitude across different platforms and expressions. Explain the choices you've made along the way. Here’s what I’d like you to do. Start by choosing a magazine (or a website or even a TV network) that you think could be better designed and could communicate more effectively across multiple channels. Set your own brief by giving a short definition of what you think the spirit of the brand is, and what kind of audience it is trying to attract.

Then, work on some of the elements of the design system and how they could be expressed in different media. You should show how your approach to typography, grids and spacing, as well as colour and imagery can make connections between the different platforms and channels while making the best experience for each.
You’ll also certainly need to think about a logo.
Once you have all these elements, try to create a cover as well as an inside spread (or two) from a magazine or newspaper, a homepage for a website or app, some typical screens for video or broadcast, or a social media card. Try to cover at least three platforms.
Last of all, present your ideas in a series of 6-10 images that could make a convincing presentation for a client. Share your final projects in the forum and give feedback to other members of the community. I'll try responding as soon as possible to your questions and comments, as well as give you some feedback on your projects. I’m looking forward to seeing what you do. Good luck!”

You should now have gained insight into the power of design systems as a framework that works for delivering content, but also as a visual identity, projecting a consistent personality across multiple platforms. Remember, this is experience and knowledge that I've gained throughout my career. Don't be hard on yourself if it takes some time to sink in. Let's take this opportunity to recap on what we've covered and set you up for your final project. Start by acquiring all the information, kn...”
