“Choosing Your Main Characters Now, we will look at the process of creating a character for your project. I write for middle-grade readers. The average age of my readers is around ten. Children tend to like to read a character a little bit older than them. I always write my main character as around 11 or 12 years old. How do we find characters around us? There are little bits of myself in a lot of my stories, books, and there are little aspects of people around me. Always keep a lookout for different aspects of people's characters that you find interesting. I tend to fictionalise everybody. ...”

However, Lisa went on to pursue a career making radio programmes for the BBC for many years before she became a professional writer.
Inspired by creating a sense of mystery in real-world settings, she has written several books including The Light Jar, Owen and the Soldier, The Boy Who Fooled the World, and her best-selling book The Goldfish Boy. Lisa also gives talks and workshops at schools and book festivals, and has been nominated for numerous awards including the Carnegie Medal and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize.
