About the video: Influences

Overview

“Let me now share with you the influences that have helped me create new designs out of recycled and hacked objects. I will start with looking at art. Back in 1915, Marcel Duchamp coined the term "ready-made" to describe a piece of art that consists of prefabricated and often mass-produced objects that have been isolated from their everyday context. From this essential landmark in art history, we will look at the work of the Asian American artist Sarah Sze. She uses recycled objects to make installations. I have also selected references coming from industrial design and architecture: the works of the Brazilian Campana brothers, the Catalonian designer Curro Claret, a small housing project made by Frei Otto in Berlin between 1982 and 1987, and Kengo Kuma’s China Academy of Art's Folk Art Museum. Looking at these examples, we will examine how environmental reasons, ethic positions, distinction, uniqueness, and social engagement can be reasons behind repurposing materials.”

In this video lesson Izaskun Chinchilla Moreno addresses the topic: Influences, which is part of the Domestika online course: Eco-Friendly Pop-up Architecture. Learn to design small scale installations from scratch by exploring the principles of circular economy.

Marcel Duchamp was the one to bring that concept to the work of art. His original idea at that moment was to liberate artists from the necessity of creating ...”
