About the final project for: Digital Comic Illustration for Social Media

Digital Comic Illustration for Social Media

“We have reached the end of this course and I want to thank you for having shared your time with me. I hope these techniques have helped you to better understand what is behind a cartoon. I have told you about my process and while it will serve as a starting point, there is much to explore in the world of comics. It is always good to create your own processes. Like any artistic discipline, what will help you the most is practice. What I recommend is that you start making vignettes of your day to day and the most remarkable moments. You can start once a week and then do it more often. That will help you to think of your stories as comics and it will be faster for you to go from an idea to a sketch, without intermediate steps. And now some final recommendations for your vignettes: • It is important to have some standardized things when working on your comics. For that, put together a guide as we saw in the course, edit your brushes and have several default color palettes. • I recommend that you try to condense your story in the fewest number of panels and when you upload it to networks include a final image where all the panels are together. • If your comic has many panels and you cannot put them together in a single image, draw a vignette that will pull people to your post without having to see the rest of your comic. To do this, make sure that the vignette alone complies with informing, amusing, outraging or that the user identifies. Here I share my brief and the complete comic:

I look forward to seeing what you have created and how you have done it! And if you don't have a client, don't worry, you can make it up. Something that always helps creatives who are just looking for clients is to make projects for fictitious clients, but that are similar to the clients they would like to have. For example, if you would really like to create a cartoon for Red Bull, come up with an energy drink brand and create a story around it. Another great option to practice vignettes with a real client is to make a vignette for a good friend's venture. Fill in the brief question sheet together and, based on that, make a vignette. Create your own opportunities! Also, upload those projects to your Domestika portfolio, share it and increase your online presence. I will answer your questions in the forum and give feedback on the tasks you upload. If I do not answer you, as soon as you upload your project, bear with me, I will see your progress as soon as I can. I remind you that this is a collaborative forum and do not hesitate to give support and comments to other students who share their work. A big greeting and good luck! ”

“Final project We've finished, but before saying goodbye I'll give you tips for your final project. Remember that what the brand wants is for the post with your comics to be shared and have lots of interaction on social media. One of the ways posts receive organic exposure is when they are shared on Instagram Stories. Our comic will probably take up three or more panels on the Instagram carousel, but people only tend to share one image. I recommend trying to condense your story into four panels and at the end include an image with the four panels together. If you can't condense your story in...”

Illustrator and Cartoon Artist

Although she is formally trained as an architect, Rocío Diestra has found success as an illustrator and cartoon artist. Her comic strips are characterized by sweet, simple, almost naif, linework, that contrasts with the provocative messages woven into the dialogue.

This contrast of sweet and sour has led her to work with major brands like Absolut Perú and Vogue España. She has also published a book with Penguin Random House titled Este libro no es acerca de ti, a collection of comics and texts that was warmly received by her audiences.

Her latest projects tackle other important topics like mental health and social issues. One of the most notable projects from her recent work is El Crush, a webcomic that became so popular on social media it was converted into a graphic novel and published by Penguin Random House.
