“Moi! I’m Molla, your Domestika teacher. How did I become the world-known crochet designer, you might ask? I was born in the summer of 1979 in the small town of Kurikka, Finland. My family has always been very DIY, I learned the importance of hand-making from a very young age. My mother taught me to sew, knit, crochet, weave, and from my father I learned the basics of woodworking. My life has always been very crafty and I have been following the same lifestyle ever since. After basic school, I studied sewing, fashion design, product design, woodworking, graphic design, photography, and branding. A little bit of everything. For many years, I worked in customer service, while at the same time starting my own brand. I loved the 1940s retro aesthetics, femininity, and detective novels, and this was the theme of my first crochet collection in 2008. The idea of my brand was to make small batches of handmade products and sell them. This was fun at first, but then I got into Aalto University to do a master’s degree in applied art and crafts, and it changed everything. Instead of making and selling handmade products, I finally had a tool to put all the knowledge from years of studying into my craft books. At Aalto University, I also started writing the first Virkkuri book, now I’m writing my sixth one. My career as an author really took flight after years of working, and now my Virkkuri books have been translated into eleven languages, making them the most widely spread craft books from Finland. After the first Virkkuri came out, I started teaching crochet workshops as well. I didn’t have experience in teaching, so you could say I started from scratch. Nowadays, I travel around the world teaching crafts and meeting crafty women. I find teaching to be the most important part of my work. It's amazing to meet people around the world and share their passion for hand-making. We create communities together. My aim is to inspire people, and I feel that I have succeeded.
