“Pencils and Paper for Dry Media In this unit, we'll talk about the materials we'll use. First, I'll tell you about graphite pencil and paper and then, we'll do some exercises with the different techniques we'll use. Graphite is a type of carbon crystal that's covered with a layer of wood to make these pencils. The pencil we usually use is HB, the common pencil. Now, I'll tell you about the different hardnesses you'll find and the ones I use. In boxes, pencils usually come from 9H to 9B. 9B stands for "black" and 9H stands for "hard."
