Interior Design Tutorial: How to Promote Your Portfolio Online

Learn how to promote your interior design projects on social media, with Patricia Bustos

If you work in interior design and want to promote your work online, you have to learn how to successfully share your portfolio on social media.

Patricia Bustos (@patriciabustos_studio) has over 15 years’ interior design experience. In this tutorial, she teaches you 6 effective and innovative strategies to promote your portfolio and prove your talent.

Don’t miss her advice!

1. Your house is your canvas

The best place to experiment with different designs is your own house, especially when you’re just starting out. Decorate each space in a range of compositions, and photograph your designs so you can share your creative talent with the world.

This is a great way to build your portfolio. You can use these photos to capture the attention of magazines, publications and potential clients.

You never know when a brand will become interested in your designs: publishing them on social media is an excellent way to attract new clients!

2. Make a range of fun videos of the same space

You can also shoot a range of simple, funny videos showing the same space in different ways, without actually changing the design.

Apps like TikTok now make it easy to create appealing content, making this a really simple way to showcase your work.

3. Share your step-by-step design process

If you have a creative soul and like using your hands, you will have considered designing a prototype or particular item for your interior designs.

Patricia recommends recording every step of your design process, from your initial drawings and material samples to the final installation in a particular setting.

Shoot another video featuring a GIF or use fast forward or slow motion techniques set to fun music to generate content with plenty of social media impact at the end of the process.

Conclude by showing what the finished design looks like in its setting.

4. Film the before and after

Videos that show how a creative process progresses always work really well on social, and interior design is no exception. Even straightforward jobs like reforming a little bathroom, or re-designing your kitchen are really appealing when you show the before and after.

Patricia recommends recording a range of views of the same space, or even filming a 360° sequence, then re-shooting from the same points of view once you’ve finished. This makes for really dynamic videos that capture audience attention.

5. Work with creatives in other disciplines

Working with other creatives is key to promoting your portfolio and expanding your reach, especially in the creative industries.

Patricia recommends enhancing your creativity through collaborations that complement your designs with artistic input and generate synergies with other disciplines.

6. Take people on a virtual tour

Use your mobile phone camera to film a tour of your project while you explain your design decisions. Show how you used color throughout the project, or explain your lighting choices, or the kind of elements you chose to decorate each area and showcase your renovation.

Your audience misses out on lots of information about your design details when you only share photos. A virtual tour of your project is an appealing and unusual way to connect with your viewers and explain your creative decisions.
