The designer behind the creative cake blog Historias del Ciervo shares a selection of his breathtaking designs
How many times have you passed by a cake shop and had to stop to visually devour cakes that look more like works of art than something to eat? Creative cake design really is an art. It involves designing, sketching, and planning to pull off a showstopper. T
hose who work in this profession think about the same things that, for example, a painter would, such as color schemes and creating textures.
Julián Ángel (@historiasdelciervo), author of the creative cake blog Historias del Ciervo, has fully embraced his fascination with cakes. He creates pieces as delicious as they are dazzling. As a cake design instructor, he travels the world teaching his techniques.
Julian's professional career, however, does not begin in the kitchen. He studied social communication and design, and it was only seven years ago that cakes came along and completely changed his life.
In 2014, he created his blog Historias del Ciervo. Julián had started working from home and, out of obligation, had started cooking. Much to his surprise, he soon began enjoying the meals he was making and the ritual of creating and sharing them.
Julián started making savory dishes before eventually daring to dabble in desserts. At the time, cupcakes were all the rage, and he thought, why not give them a go? For his first experiment, he got a recipe off the internet. The instructions were confusing, and the results were a failure. How could it be so difficult to make simple cupcakes? Julian did some research.
I discovered that a dessert can not only taste good but can also create moments of beauty to be shared with others.
What he discovered would keep him hooked. Suddenly he could see what baking and science had in common: chemistry, physics, and the importance of being accurate with your formulas. It could see that for someone like him, who was as methodical as he was creative, this world was ideal.
Slowly, he began to educate himself. He bought books, signed up for classes, and discovered some of his biggest influences, such as the blog Call me Cupcake, which eventually inspired him to launch his own blog.
Baking was the place where he took refuge and expressed his creativity. He was excited to share his learning process with others. Julián’s Instagram and blog following kept growing, and within a few months, he was being featured on platforms such as Beautiful Cuisines.
Some of his time-lapse videos of cake decorating went viral and, within a few hours of posting, he found himself gaining thousands and thousands of followers. In the middle of 2016, a particularly fruitful year for him, he received a nomination for the Saveur Blog Awards, an award recognizing the work of food blogs around the world.
Soon after that, he received an invitation to teach classes in Singapore, which marked the beginning of his career as an international cake design instructor. This specialty would lead him to teach classes in cities like Barcelona, Miami, New York, and Abu Dhabi.
Julián teaches what he defines as "the language that unites the world": food and beauty, in his Domestika course Cake Design: Modern Decorating Techniques. Sign up to learn more about Julián, his art, and his techniques.
