6 Tips For Designing Packaging For The Perfect Unboxing Experience

Discover everything you should keep in mind when designing packaging for your product and the unboxing experience
One of the greatest visual and tactile experiences when buying something, especially when it’s an online purchase, is the moment of unboxing. That’s why packaging has become an important pillar of the branding of many businesses: you’ve got to know where to source the materials and how to balance functionality and aesthetics to create exciting packaging that suitable protects what’s inside.
Tatabi Studio (@tatabi) takes care of every detail of the packaging and unboxing experience and has developed this six-point guide that will help you plan your own product’s perfect design.

1. Brand personality
You should keep in mind that packaging is often the first physical image of your brand a customer will lay their eyes and hands on. Therefore, you’ve got to make sure that it reflects your personality. For example, if the brand is ecological, make sure you choose a eco-friendly material. If, on the other hand, it’s a technological brand, more metallic elements would be worth considering.
2. Cost and budget
A company normally has a budget set for their packaging, and the packaging must be adapted to it accordingly. It’s important that the business specifies a cost per unit as that will inform the design and its limitations.
3. Size
When it comes to designing the packaging, you should sit down with the client to analyze their range of products, and establish if various sizes will be needed or there will be a standard measurement. Bear in mind that this will also affect your budget and the production process.

4. Storage
Sometimes clients do not consider the space needed for their products and it is essential to establish their capacity. This will inform whether the design can have volume or needs to be foldable; whether you can use self-assembly boxes or only boxes that are already assembled; and other key features of the design brief.
5. Weight and dimensions
It’s important that packaging adheres to the standard measurements of delivery services, as this can save considerable costs. You should also consider if you are delivering to national or international markets.
6. Protection
As an online shopper, you may notice that packaging is often wrapped in a number of things like boxes and bags outside the original packaging. That's because the company is not compensated for having to make the return or collection of the product, so it is very important that it is protected and arrives in good condition.
