How to Make a Lucky Knot

Learn how to create a simple decorative knot for use in macramé with Belén Senra

An easy way to get started in the fun and therapeutic world of macramé is by learning one of its most basic decorative knots: the lucky knot. All you need is a rope and the desire to express your creativity.

In the following video, the textile artist who founded the brand RanRan Design, Belén Senra (@belensenra), shows you step by step how to create this simple and beautiful Chinese knot.

1. Cut the rope to the desired length

In this case, Belén has decided to use a 1.20m rope.

2. Create a three-petal flower and start knotting

With the string placed on a flat surface, arrange it so that it looks like a flower with three petals and a stem. Pass the stem over the first petal, the first petal over the second petal and the second petal over the third petal.

3. Insert the third petal into the hole

To finish the first round, insert the third petal into the remaining hole. Adjust it and pull the stem back towards you to start knotting again.

4. Repeat the process, this time to the left

Starting now to the left, pass the stem over the first petal, the first over the second and the second over the third. Finally insert the third petal into the resulting hole and squeeze.

Ready! You've already started on macramé. You can use this knot as a brooch, hang it from a bag, as a key ring, or any other decorative element you can think of.
