About the final project for: Specialization in 3D Textured Tapestry and Weaving Techniques
From Loom to Tapestry: Basic Techniques to 3D Textures
“Final Project: Your Personal Woven Piece Objective The goal of this final project is to create a unique handwoven piece that reflects your personal style, creative vision, and the techniques you’ve explored throughout the course. You’ll combine color, texture, and structure to design a tapestry, wall hanging, or sculptural form that brings beauty and meaning to any space. Project Description Throughout the course, you’ve learned a variety of weaving methods—from circular and abstract tapestries to bold rya knots and 3D sculptural shapes. Now it’s time to bring those skills together in one original piece. This project invites you to explore your favorite materials, blend techniques, and express yourself through composition and form. Let your piece reflect not only what you’ve learned, but who you are as a maker. Whether your final work is calm and minimal or full of color and movement, it should carry your personal touch and intention. Project Components 1. Creative Concept • Choose the size, format, and purpose of your piece (wall hanging, sculptural form, decorative object, etc.) • Define a theme, mood, or inspiration to guide your decisions. 2. Technique and Texture • Use at least two weaving techniques from the course (e.g., rya knots, open-center weaving, sculptural shaping). • Combine flat and dimensional elements to create visual interest and depth. 3. Color and Composition • Select a thoughtful color palette that complements your design. • Play with rhythm, contrast, and balance to enhance your visual storytelling. 4. Finishing and Presentation • Neatly finish the back and edges of your piece. • Prepare your work for hanging or display, considering both aesthetics and function. Development Steps 1. Inspiration and Planning • Sketch or gather references that reflect your vision. • Test materials and color combinations before starting your final piece. 2. Weaving Process • Set up your frame loom and begin weaving, combining techniques as you go. • Pause often to assess proportions, texture, and flow. 3. Final Touches • Secure and clean up loose ends. • Add final elements or embellishments that complete your design. 4. Documentation • Photograph your finished work in natural light. • Optionally, share a short artist note describing your inspiration and process. Final Deliverables • One original handwoven piece using a combination of techniques learned in the course. • 2–3 high-quality photographs of the finished piece (on display or against a neutral background). • A short text (max. 200 words) explaining your creative process, material choices, and what this piece represents to you. You’ve built a strong foundation—now it’s time to push your creativity further. This final piece is your chance to showcase your voice as a maker: bold, thoughtful, and uniquely yours. Trust your instincts, embrace the process, and create something that not only reflects what you've learned, but who you are becoming.”
