About the final project for: Fashion Specialization: Upcycling, Printing and Personalization
Transformative Fashion: Upcycling, Printing, and Personalization
“The goal of your project is to creatively and personally apply the techniques learned in the course—from upcycling and basic sewing to printing, painting, embroidery, crochet, and garment recycling—to transform or reinvent a garment (or set of materials) into a unique and eco-friendly piece. Important Note: From the first step, take notes and document each part of the process with images. This will help you reflect on your work and share your creative evolution in the final presentation. PROJECT PHASES Phase 1: Inspiration and Conceptualization ⬩Research your influences: Review the instructions and define which styles or messages catch your attention. ⬩Create a mood board: Gather images, colors, textures, and examples of works that inspire you and connect with sustainable fashion. ⬩Define your concept: Think about the story you want to tell with your piece. What does sustainable fashion mean to you? How is it reflected in your creation? Phase 2: Selection and Planning ⬩Choose your base: It can be an old garment or a second-hand item you want to transform. ⬩Analyze the garment or materials: Observe the fabric, shape, and details. Determine which elements can be modified or improved. ⬩Plan the techniques to use: Decide if you want to work on the garment using: Upcycling and sewing: deconstructing and reconstructing the garment, adjusting shapes, or combining pieces. Textile printing: experimenting with sublimation, sprays, or collages. Hand painting: transforming the garment with drawing techniques and color blending. Embroidery and patches: creating details with letters or personalized shapes. Crochet or accessory recycling: repurposing it, such as turning the garment into a backpack or bag. ⬩Create a step-by-step plan: List the materials, tools, and time needed for each stage. Remember to document each decision and progress with images and notes. Phase 3: Execution ⬩Transform and personalize: Apply the techniques you have chosen. Using all of them is necessary; what matters is that each action contributes to your vision. ⬩Experiment: Combine, adapt, and reinterpret each technique (whether sewing, printing, painting, embroidery, or crochet) so the final result is yours. ⬩Document the process: Take photos and note your observations, mistakes, and discoveries at each stage. Phase 4: Documentation and Reflection ⬩Record the complete process: Ensure images and notes show the before, during, and after transformation. ⬩Write a brief journal: Reflect on the decisions made, the challenges, and what you have learned in each phase. ⬩Connect with sustainability: Explain how your project contributes to eco-friendly fashion and recycling, highlighting the importance of upcycling. Phase 5: Final Presentation ⬩Prepare your presentation in your Domestika portfolio: Gather all the available information about the project from start to finish. ⬩Tell your story: Show the before and after of your piece, explain which techniques you applied, and how your creation relates to sustainable fashion and garment transformation. ⬩Share your learnings: Describe how you faced and solved problems throughout the process and how you documented each step. Final Tips ⬩Be authentic and creative: There is no single path; let your tastes and experiences guide your creation. ⬩Innovatively combine techniques: Depending on what best suits your idea, you can use one or several. ⬩Pay attention to details: Transformation is both technical and emotional. Every stitch, stroke, or application adds to your piece. ⬩Have fun and learn: This project is an opportunity to experiment, make mistakes, and grow in a limitless creative process. With this proposal, we believe you have the freedom to explore and combine the techniques learned in the course while promoting the importance of documenting each stage of the process to reflect and share your sustainable fashion experience. We are eager to see what you have learned. Dare to turn the old into something unique and eco-friendly!”
