Creative Gameplay Maps: Illustrate a Fantasy World
“Thank you so much for joining me on this journey! It has been so much fun to create this course and share my experience and creative process with you. I hope you had a good time as well! I would love to hear your feedback and see how your own map turned out! If you haven't yet finished your project, or need some direction, that's totally okay. We all get stuck sometimes. I believe in you and I know your map will be great. Don't forget that it can and should be completely different from mine! We could all use the same lists and still create a different result, and that's what's beautiful about adding a little randomness to your work. If I could break this entire course down into a few bullet points, it would be this: • Make it fun. Whether it's your lists, the rough sketches, or the final artwork, check in with yourself to see if you're having fun. If you're not, ask yourself why and see if you can change things. • Repeat, repeat, repeat. If you're still not having fun and something isn't clicking, try doing what you're doing 5 or 10 more times before you move on to the next step. Sometimes it just takes a little perseverance to get past the rut. • Don't be afraid to try new things. If you find yourself so stuck that there's no way you could have fun doing what you're doing, change what you're doing! Lots of my projects begin going in one direction and change halfway through. The change can be scary and frustrating, but it's worth exploring if it means you'll be happier in the end. • Embrace the surprises. I honestly didn't know what my map would look like when I started the project. It all came down to the thumbnail sketches and rolling the die. It can be hard to let lose control, but after making so many decisions, sometimes it's nice to let something else make the decisions for you. • Take a break. Last and most important is to give yourself a break. If all else fails and you still feel stuck, maybe it's not the right time to work on this! Watch a movie, make a meal, go for a walk, anything to get your mind off of the trouble. Sometimes your brain keeps working on it while you're not thinking about the problem and it will suddenly click when you're least expecting it! To share your finished project, simply click on the button "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it, adding a brief explanation about what you have done in each one. These are the main steps to follow: Brainstorm and Thumbnail Sketches Write down some ideas for people, places, and things that you can show in the design. Then, make different little sketches using the same mix of shapes and see how different you can get them.

“ Final Project Hey, it's me, Andrew, your teacher for this last bit. I want to leave a final message for you to send you off on your way. I have never done anything like this. This is my first time teaching a course like this, so I hope you had a good time along the way, I know I did. I would love to see what you did and where you'll take this next. If you haven't finished yet, or are getting stuck, then that's okay. One thing I'll leave you with is to distill this course down into a few points. Number one is to ask yourself if you are having fun. I find if I get stuck on a project or if I...”
