Caddyshack Poster

I get to work with Mondo every so often on a variety of posters. This was one of them!

So Caddyshack is a comedy from 1980. I hadn't seen the movie before Mondo approached me for the poster so the first step was to rent it, watch it, and take a whole bunch of notes.

While I went through a number of sketches, this one felt right. The thumbnail (above left) was no more than an inch or two in size. I try to work really small so that I know the composition is working. I liked the party vibe, the opportunity to include all of the characters, and a twist on the sand trap in golf. After the early thumbnail was approved I proceed to do the tight sketch.

With the sketch approved, I moved on to colour. The below studies all shared a similar palette and the same number of colours because this was a screenprinted poster.

Options 3 and 4 were selected so we actually got to print two of the colour studies! At some point in the process we moved the movie title from the top to the bottom so that there was more of a focus on the main protagonist and antagonist.
