“ The Values In this lesson, we'll talk about values and how to make your scene readable with black and white, explore different lighting ideas, and put the flesh on your sketch. While in the final painting we might end up with many values, I'd love to think of the value system as concisely as possible. We will talk about a four-value system that I constantly use and it has worked for me. With those four values, we could create a scene that's realistic and you can feel the light in the scene. It is important to limit yourself to four values because once you have too many values in your hand...”

Tommy Kim is an art director in the animation industry and an urban sketch enthusiast. Though he spent most of his life in Los Angeles, he is now based in Honolulu, Hawaii, where he enjoys practicing his hobby of plein-air painting.
