Urban Sketching: Create Expressive Cityscapes

“Thank you for taking this journey with me! I hope you've enjoyed it and learned some new ways to capture the world around you. It's now time to work on your project. To create your dynamic and expressive scene, you can use as a reference the video of the San Francisco street I've used for my drawing. But I also encourage you to find your own location. You can go to a place that inspires you, sit somewhere around the city, or use a video from a place you love. Either way, I strongly suggest you take the time to gather inspiration and make a unique project of your own. Make sure to keep track of your progress with different pictures of each step. It would be great if you could also explain the choices you've made along the way and tell us if you have any doubts. This will help me guide you better if you need advice. Here are the main steps to follow: The Sketches Find a location or scene you want to paint. Frame the composition with your hands by framing a rectangle and/or by making thumbnail sketches on a separate paper sheet. Then choose the one you like the most and draw a rough sketch of the scene.

Gestural Watercolor Using watercolor, create a light gestural wash as the foundation of the painting, observing major shapes and preserving white areas.
A Solid Foreground Draw permanent objects in the scene (like buildings, trees, parked cars, etc.) in permanent, black media. Make sure to keep the background lighter.
Movement Draw moving objects like cars and people with water-soluble materials, then wash them out with water to create a moving effect.
Final Details Add finishing touches, such as white outlines or highlights, another layer of cars, a little bit more paint in certain areas, or deeper shadows.
I can't wait to see the project you come up with, so don't forget to share it in the forum. You can do so by clicking on "Create your project". Remember to share both the final result and the steps that have led you to it. Domestika has a great community, where we are all looking to grow and learn. So join in, share your process, ideas, and doubts, and comment on others' work. I will be around as often as I can to answer any questions you may have and give you some feedback. Enjoy your drawing journey!”

“ Final Project Dear students, thank you for joining me on this course. I appreciate you taking this journey with me. I hope you learned a few things in this course and hopefully, some new ways to capture the world around you. As promised, I'll leave you with a few tips to help you get started with your final project. Maybe you want to draw a place you've always wanted to draw or maybe just walk around your city and find a comfortable spot and see what you can find inspiring there. As we did in this course, you can even take a short video and draw from that at home so you don't work on loca...”
